What
is the central message that God gave through the angel of the Lord to the
shepherds? The Bible
tells us: "Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the
radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were frightened, but the
angel reassured them. 'Do not be afraid! I bring you good news of great joy
for everyone!' " [Luke 2:8-10]. Suddenly the angel was surrounded by a
vast host of others - the armies of heaven - praising God: "Glory to God in
the highest heaven, and peace on earth to all whom God favours" [Luke
2:13-14]. Christmas is the season when we should remember the message
of God to the shepherds.
It is a message of God's
favour!
It is a message of good news of great joy. God loves us. He loves us so much
that He was willing to send Jesus, His only Son, to this world to save us
from the penalty and power of sin. He loves us so much that He desires us to
know Him our Heavenly Father who desires to give good gifts to those who ask
Him [Matthew 7:11]. He loves us so much that Jesus came to give us life in
all its fullness [John 10:10]. Let's remember the message of Jesus at the
start of His ministry. He said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He
has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor. ... He has sent me to
proclaim ... that the time of the Lord's favour has come" [Luke 4:18-19].
Let's thank God today for His love and favour.
